I understand the finger placements and things but the dashes in the tabs have me confused. can any one explain them?

dash means that you take more time to play the previous note. Is without dash you blow 1 second, with the dash you blow 2 secondes

I actually stopped using dashes and just rely on having a feel for the music by listening to a sample ahead of time.
I just use spacing in my tabs now to denote length.
